Students will consider the value of food beyond its nutritional content and its cost by considering how they and other people at different stages of the Food System interpret the value of food.

By the end of this lesson and the associated activities, students will have a better understanding of the value of food beyond its nutritional content. Students will explore plating techniques used by professional Chefs!

By the end of this lesson and the associated activities, students have considered the value of food beyond its nutritional content and its cost by exploring plating techniques and aesthetics used by Chefs, as well as personal and cultural food stories and memories.

Tasting is a culinary skill that is often undervalued. However, tasting and identifying flavours can be the most important tool in a chef’s tool box. This lesson will help students learn to taste, and will support them in identifying and expanding their food comfort zones.

Students will explore the history and different methods of food preservation. We recommend this lesson be completed for a more in-depth look at food processing as a follow-up to our introductory Food Systems lesson.
