Sponsor Spotlight: Westminster College Foundation

The story of Westminster College Foundation (WCF) began almost 60 years ago when seven community-spirited individuals came together to provide a residential place for United Church members attending Western University. While WCF started out as a “home away from home” for students they also provided support for community learning and development over the years. After over 40 years of operation, the residence property was sold to Western University in 2005. While one chapter of their charitable journey ended another would soon begin. In 2007 WCF was granted Charitable Foundation status and they continued their philanthropic work in the London and area community.

WCF has a staggeringly positive impact on our community by providing much needed support to charitable organizations. Since its inception as a foundation, WCF has provided over $3.7 million to charities in the London and the surrounding communities. Their support has gone to programs that range from summer camps to refugee assistance to Meals on Wheels. The foundation advances and assists areas in education, health and/or spiritual care. Their list of grant recipients is beyond extensive, and their charitable efforts have immeasurably improved life in London and area for youth and seniors. WCF is always looking to support creative new initiatives. No cause is too big or too small for the Westminster College Foundation.

WCF and Growing Chefs! Ontario

WCF recently selected the Growing Chefs! Ontario School Food Education Project to receive a $15,000 grant because they believe it is a creative, innovative and effective way to engage youth in understanding the importance of food and nutrition. They admire that the School Project is delivered to students of all grades (JK-Grade 8) and that lessons not only include basic cooking skills, but also explain the principles of agriculture, the importance of nutrition and the potential impact of making better food choices.

The School Food Education Project has benefited greatly from the incredible contributions of the Westminster College Foundation and with their generous donations, Growing Chefs! has been able to purchase new equipment and local food supplies for the program. The donation also went towards the creation of recipe books which are sent home with students so families can see what their youngest members are up to at school and perhaps involve them more in their home kitchens. Furthermore, with WCF’s help Growing Chefs! is able to deliver School Project programming without passing costs on to participating schools, teachers or students. Westminster College Foundation has given Growing Chefs! the resources to visit more schools, which in turn increases the amount of children in London that learn the importance of cooking and eating wholesome healthy food!
