Growing Chefs! Ontario (GCO) is a registered charity based in London, Ontario that unites Chefs, growers, educators and community members in children’s food education projects. Our mission is to get kids excited about healthy wholesome food, and to build and maintain a healthy, empowered community that is engaged with its food system.

GCO approaches food education from the perspective of food-systems: the understanding that our daily food choices are embedding in local and global systems with links to community, health, economies, and the environment. Our education programs are experiential learning opportunities in which participates interact with food from production to preparation to consumption and beyond. We work with a team of skilled Chefs and educators to implement food-based activities that are fun, delicious and inspiring. GCO works closely with multiple London school boards and community agencies to provide unique learning experiences.

GCO is now hiring an Education Projects and Volunteer Coordinator to lead our education staff and bring our project portfolio to life. Through their commitment to learning and growth, the Education Projects and Volunteer Coordinator will fulfill an integral role within GCO.


Roles and Responsibilities

Program Delivery and Development (75%)

  • Manage partnerships between GCO, school boards, teachers and community agencies

  • Ensure all program agreements are fulfilled
  • Act as the liaison between program partners and the GCO team to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of programs
  • Act as the lead educator for programs, verbally delivering food-themed lessons to children and youth and managing participant dynamics during programs
  • Support the Chef team in providing instruction during hands-on food lessons
  • Lead GCO in (re) developing and implementing food-based, curriculum-linked programs such as in-school visits, field-trips, day camps and drop-in classes
  • Direct the administration of food education programs including staff/volunteer scheduling, program bookings, records keeping, etc.
  • Maintain records of programs for the purposes of evaluation and grant reporting
  • Assist with the collection and compilation of participant feedback for the purposes of evaluation and grant reporting
  • Ensure education programming meets expectations as outlined in the Strategic Plan and grant proposals
  • Communicate with the Events and Chef teams to effectively plan programming
  • Create and update content for print resources such as program manuals, lesson plans, visual learning aids, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager to tell the stories of our programs
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager and Fund Developer to celebrate our volunteers and donors

Human Resources (20%)

  • Manage the GCO volunteer program, including the screening, orientation, training, supervision and ongoing evaluation of all program volunteers

  • Work with the entire GCO team to evaluate the volunteer program and suggest measures for improvement

  • Maintain detailed and accurate volunteer records, including but not limited to,  skills / experiences, Vulnerable Sector screening, criminal defense declarations and hours logged, using the platform Charity Republic
  • Provide mentorship and training to all people involved in the delivery of food education programs including part-time staff, volunteers, co-op or placement students, etc.
  • Facilitate team-building opportunities for those involved in food education programming such as team meetings, leadership development activities and professional development
  • Assist with staff scheduling
  • Coordinate volunteer scheduling

Administration (5%)

  • Assist with grant reporting
  • Assist with public engagement opportunities like conference presentations, committee meetings, etc.
  • Inventory and maintain non-culinary equipment for multiple programs (posters, art materials, books, etc.)
  • Participate in relevant professional development opportunities


Required Skills and Experience

  • Confident verbal communication skills, particularly with children and youth
  • Excellent written communication skills in email, reports and lesson plans
  • Significant experience in experiential education program design and delivery
  • Demonstrated strength as a team leader
  •  Ability to self-manage timelines as due
  • Ability to graciously provide and receive feedback
  • Adaptability to identify problems and react effectively in real time
  • Exceptionally strong organizational planning and time management skills to coordinate multiple education programs simultaneously
  • Vision/mission focused
  • Enthusiasm to inspire learning in others
  • Able to work independently or as part of a strong team environment
  • A passion for personal and professional development
  • Forward-thinking: ability to develop a program plan from concept to execution
  • Experience with positive behavioural management and conflict resolution for children and youth
  • Experience with the Ontario Elementary curriculum is an asset
  • Experience in the food industry is an asset
  • Experience with sustainable food (as a farmer/gardener, cook/chef, educator/researcher) is an asset
  • Experience managing volunteers
  • First Aid certification is an asset
  • Safe Food Handler’s Certificate is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license is an asset
